Mikael Siidorow Opintovastaavaksi / for Master of Academic Affairs

Hellurei!

Olen Mikael Siidorow, ensimmäistä fuksipolveä jKr (jälkeen koronan) eli '21. Haen Tietokillan opintovastaavaksi vuodelle '23.

Toimin kesällä erään tietotekniikan laitoksen kurssin kehitystiimissä, jolloin sain siemailla vähän opiskelijoiden etujen esiin tuomista. Syvemmän kiinnostuksen herättyä haluaisin laajentaa edunvalvontaa yksittäisestä kurssista koko laitoksen ja yliopiston tasolle.

Kastoin myös varpaani opintovastaavan konkreettisempiin tehtäviin tänä syksynä, kun olin mukana luomassa syksyn opintokyselyä (kannattaa vastaa nopee :D). Lisäksi olen ostanut pullaa kaupasta ainakin joskus elämäni aikana.

Opintovastaavan rooli on yleisesti hyvin näkymätön, joten suosittuja vaalilupauksia on hankala antaa. Haluan kuitenkin jatkaa nykyisen opintovastaavan työtä ja varmistaa, että uusi varjo-opinto-opas valmistuu joskus™.

Heyo!

I’m Mikael Siidorow, of the first freshman generation AS (anno salutis (post-covid)) or '21. I’m applying to be the master of academic affairs of Tietokilta for '23.

I was part of the development team for a course in the Computer Science department this summer, which gave me a small sample of student advocacy. With deeper interest aroused, I’d like to expand my advocacy from a single course to the department and university level.

I also dipped my toe into the more tangible work of the master of academic affairs this fall, when I was involved in making the fall study survey (which is still open :D). Also, I’ve bought pulla at the store at least once in my life.

The role of the master of academic affairs is generally very invisible, so it’s hard to make popular election promises. However, I would like to continue the work of the current master of academic affairs and ensure that the new varjo-opinto-opas is finished soon™.

Hello Mikael,

the grade distribution of a recent instance of the course “Differential and integral equations 2” (MS-A0202) looked like this:

How would you go on about ensuring that courses have fair grading, especially if they’re compulsory courses that everyone must take?

Hi Emilia, great question!

There are two sides to the issue, specific course instances and general grading principles. For the first case, if there is one course where the grading is clearly out of line in comparison to other similar courses, I would contact SCI Learning Services and forward the issue to the school.

For the main thing, ensuring courses have fair grading is a long process. The main portion would be collecting data from students with surveys and direct complaints, then presenting the data at SCI board meetings. Hopefully, this could bring more light to inefficient teaching methods or unfairly strict grading criteria.
