Daniel Kaluski and Matti Kokkonen for International Captains / Kansainvälisyysvastaaviksi

Hi all!

We are Daniel Kaluski and Matti Kokkonen, and we are applying for the role of International Captain(s)! We decided to apply for the role as a pair, as the Computer Science guild gets a lot of master’s and international students and as a pair, we can accommodate each individual student better.

We have both been International Tutors twice already. We feel that this is a natural continuation as we have enjoyed meeting and hanging out with the international students, as well as being a part of organizing the events.

Daniel: “My tutoring days started already in my freshman year, when I was an international tutor for exchange students starting in January. After that, I have tutored twice for Finnish freshman and this year I am a tutor for the SECCLO students. This year I have also been acting as Computer Science guild’s Great Grandma as well as being a part of Teekkari culture committee. Because of this I have gained a lot of experience on how to manage several things and organizing different events. I also have board experience through KYS (Guilds friendship society) and Polygame.”

Matti: “For this year, I am also a first-mate ISO which has given me a lot of insight in to organizing and managing different events for the fuksis. As I am currently in my fifth year of studies, I feel that I have a large amount of experience with the teekkari culture. I take pride and enjoy having the opportunity to enhance the experience of the students coming to Otaniemi. I want them to love the culture as much as I do and make sure that it is an experience they will never forget.”

We want to ensure international students the best experience they can gain from Aalto. Often international students as well as master’s students are in Aalto for a shorter time hence it is very important for us that they get to enjoy and be a part of the Teekkari experience as quickly as possible. Therefore, we propose the following things:

  • We think that supplying information for international students should be better. Upcoming events can be found from the Computer Science guild website, but it is still bothersome to keep track of it. Hence why it is important to advertise upcoming events in Telegram clearly and more often. We would love to cooperate with the guild’s publicists more on this. We will encourage International Tutors to advertise and talk about upcoming events in their own fuksigroups as well.

  • We want to encourage people to try new things. We will organize more, and different types of events aimed specially at international students. And if you are unable to find meaningful activities through the guild, Otaniemi has also a lot of different societies which should be advertised more and encourage people to try them out.

  • In addition to the fuksi-guidebook, we will create a proper international student guidebook focusing on the practical aspect of studying in Otaniemi e.g., Housing, Transportation, Visa information, Banking. This guidebook focusing on practical aspects will be sent via email well in advance.

Since the International Captains are responsible for so many students, we find it necessary for at least one of us to be in the guild’s board. Primarily Daniel will apply for the guild board. “I have considered joining the guild’s board for a long time, as I am very interested in the management aspect as well as the added responsibilities. I have also advanced my studies well hence I would be able dedicate a lot of time and effort for my time as a International Captain as well as a member of the guild’s board.”

If you have any more questions, we are happy to answer below or on telegram, @kaluSCI (Daniel) or @Masakilleri (Matti).

Daniel Kaluski and Matti Kokkonen

Moro!

  • Mielestämme KV opiskelijoihin kohdistunutta tiedotusta tulisi parantaa.

  • Fuksioppaan rinnaksi teemme kunnollisen KV opiskelijan oppaan Otaniemessä opiskeluun.

@kaluSCI (Daniel), @Masakilleri (Matti)

Hi!

Happy to see people excited about applying to the position. I also want to ask a few questions as a former international captain.

  • What was your favourite experience as an international tutor?

  • Being the international captain means to take in a ton of work and the job lasts for a year and a half. How are you planning on not letting all of it overwhelm you?

  • You are applying as a pair, but would you as individuals be open to having someone else as your partner? This is not a leading question, it’s okay to say no. It’s just better if you think about it before election day.

  • Do you have any ideas ready for the new international events you’re planning? Would they also be open to Finnish freshmen & students?

  • International tutors are notoriously difficult to find. Do you have any special plans for recruiting?

Hei, onnittelut että haitte rooliin! Harmi, että meidän pitää kilpailla. Paras voittakoon.
Minulla on muutama (kieltämättä) haastavaa kysymystä teille:

  2. Oletteko pohtineet sitä, miten aiotte kehittää Tietokillasta enemmän kv-inkluusiivisemman ympäristön? Olen kuullut useaan otteeseen, että kv-opiskelijat tuntevat itsensä ulkopuolisiksi.

  3. Paras kilta?

Onnea vaaleihin! Saatte ehdottomasti lähettää minullekin kysymyksiä :D.

Hello! Congratulations on applying. Shame, that we must compete. May the best one win.
I have a few admittely tricky questions for you two:

  1. I’ve heard that having two international captains has brought communication and division of labor challenges. Have you thought about how you plan to split work into sensible and fair units? How do you plan to ensure that communication stays smooth (between you two, and others).

  2. Have you pondered how you plan on making Tietokilta a more international friendly environment? I’ve heard multiple times, that international students feel like outsiders.

  3. Best guild?

Good luck for the elections! I invite you to send questions to me as well :D.
Aaron Äärelä

Hey Eelis! Thank you for the questions!

  1. Daniel: “The best experience is getting to know people who come from different parts of the world and how things are different (or similar) compared to Finland. Anything from daily life to a school.”

Matti: “I love getting to know other cultures, and just how different they can be compared to ours in Finland. International students come from all over the world, so it is nice to see them come together as a group.”

  1. This is where we think having two people as the International captains shines the most. We can ask each other for help and discuss things together. In addition if one feels way too overwhelmed, they might take a smallish break and the other one can take charge for a while.

Daniel: “I have now taken enough courses so that during my year and half as an international Captain, I could take either a very minimal amount of courses or even no courses at all allowing me to focus on the guild responsibilities.”

Matti: “My studies have progressed well enough allowing me to take just the bare minimum amount during my time as an international captain. I am also very flexible with my schedule in general.”

  2. Initially no. We have talked a lot about this and the main thing is we get along together and are on the same page with how things should be handled. Having someone else as your partner might unnecessarily complicate things.

  3. This is a tough question. Primarily trips to places such as Suomenlinna would be a good place to start (as has been done in previous year(s)). These events are by themselves very welcoming. We cannot forbid Finnish students and especially new Masters students from not attending, but they would primarily targeted for International students. We hope to discuss more about this with next years KVTMK.

  4. This is were we need to work with the new upcoming Tutor responsible (ISO vastaava) and discuss this even further. In previous years if someone applied to be a tutor for Finnish fuksis and didn’t get in, they were asked if they want to be an international tutor instead. This could be approached from a different angle as in asking “Why don’t you want to be an international tutor?” first.

Hey Aaron! Thank you for the questions and good luck to you as well.

  1. We have heard similar things and we believe this to be a purely people related issue. We have discussed about whether we want to apply together or against each other. The conclusion was that our goals are very similar, we come along very well and have similar goals hence we decided to apply together. Continuous communication is the key.
About splitting the work, we do not think splitting the work at this point is that important. Yes we decided that from us Daniel will apply to the board initially which could cause some work to be split between us. We believe that with both of us being on the same page all the time allows for smooth work and in case one cannot make it, the other can easily take the full responsibility for a while. One thing we know is that the Captains quarters (?) (Kapteenin Wartti) are easy to split and would be a huge relief for both of us.

  2. This has a lot to do with event advertisement. If nobody from friend/fuksi group is going to an event, the threshold to go there alone is much higher. We want to work more closely with the International tutors as well as the next Tutor Responsible to make tutors advertise and explain the events much more lowering the threshold.
Sitsit are also very close to both our hearts and from experience we can say that sitsit might be often be a place where non-Finnish speakers might are confused. Sitsit already have many English songs but most donkey bridges are still in Finnish. This could most definitely be improved, but depends largely on the new master of song masters and the committee.
We did mention that going to the guilds websites are a bit tedious. While we do not entirely know the state of the new guild websites, we hope and will fight for our websites to be in English as well!

—ENGLISH BELOW—

Moikka!

Terkuin,

Anna

Hi!

Awesome that you applied to a position in guild!

The others have asked many good questions already! I have few questions too.

What is your viewpoint for inclusivity of guild’s activities. Would you describe the ways it has been endorsed in our community?

What do you think is good already, and what needs improvement?

Do you think whether it is necessary to gather a (board driven?) group to advocate for how to improve inclusivity or something similar to that?

Best regards,

Anna

Hi Anna,

thank you for your great questions.

What is your viewpoint for inclusivity of guild’s activities. Would you describe the ways it has been endorsed in our community?

Largely we would say the guild is very welcoming to everyone no matter who they are. Most issues related to international students occur when events are held 100% in Finnish and in those some international people might not feel welcoming. Finding the correct balance between having events in Finnish, Finnish and English or only in English is difficult, but we aim to find that balance.

What do you think is good already, and what needs improvement?

Partially answered above, but mapping the situation directly from the guild members via the soon to be chosen harassment contact person and the possible inclusivity group. We look forward to seeing what other peoples opinions are on the matter, as openness is an important fact.

Do you think whether it is necessary to gather a (board driven?) group to advocate for how to improve inclusivity or something similar to that?

Yes, we think it is a good idea, but it is very important to remember that everyone has a part in creating a guild that is friendly and open to all.

Best regards,

Matti and Daniel
